Coaching versus Mentoring – Parallels and Perpendiculars
Synonymy is a funny thing. We tend to use one word as a substitute for another, and believe that the point we wish to communicate has been delivered. Little do we know, though, that the meaning of the new word is perhaps ever so slightly different than what we intend. The purpose of this linguistic dissection is to avoid miscommunication, as is seen when we tend to mix up “coaching” and “mentoring.” The words, although similar in meaning, carry two very specific sets of characteristics, which describe specific acts and distinctive situations.
